Sail Away Under the Stars with a Good Book
Our February family night was a success! Adults and children loved relaxing on comfy blankets, armed with flashlights and a snack to read their new books. It was an evening celebrating literacy and promoting reading with friends and family.
Chinese New Year
Miss Helen came back to visit us again for Chinese New Year! Students enjoyed learning the numbers 1-10 in Chinese with group games on the white board as well as their Lunar animal. The culminating event included stuffing delicious dumplings to cook and enjoying longevity noodles. Students had a blast!
Thank you to all of our families who came to celebrate our annual Fall Festival & Turkey Dinner! A special thank you to our community sponsors who helped to make the day a success.
Students this week harvested over 14 pounds of potatoes!
Here is a look into our fantastic summer! We partnered with Save the Bay, The Westerly Land Trust, Ayers Foundation, and Westerly Public Library & Wilcox Park. Our campers and staff all enjoyed and learned together! We went on fun Friday field trips that included Water Wizz, Tomaquag Museum, Burlingame, Theater by the Sea and Mr. Joes House. Our campers grew academically, socially and tried new things. Here is to another exciting Hasbro Summer Learning Program adventure!
Enjoying some free time and movie day!
Our Crime Scene Investigators on the job!
Lending a Helping Hand
Students helped plant geraniums to later be planted in the Northend of Westerly. Great work getting the process started!
BASE students are always busy, learning, creating and experiencing new things.
It's a Mystery!
Students enjoyed a forensic science unit where they had to work like true scientists to solve some Tower Street Mysteries. All the cases featured Tower Street staff as the suspects and students had to go through the evidence to find out who was responsible.
Kids 2 Care Club
New this school year we created a service learning class designed to give students a stronger connection to our community. This past session they made decorations, ornaments, and decorated holiday cards to be delivered to a local nursing home.
Holiday Clothing Drive Beginning this month we will be starting our annual “Sharing Closet.” All donations are welcome including but not limited to long sleeve shirts, sweaters, shoes, boots, pants, and outerwear of all sizes. Our sharing closet will be open to all families and is located in the staff lounge. We ask that any donations be washed prior to drop off. All donations can be added to the Sharing Closet bin next to the clothes rack. As parents and caregivers we know how expensive our children’s clothing can be especially during this time of year. We hope that each family will take advantage of this opportunity by donating, taking, and or swapping clothes.
Helping Local Animals
In our Kids 2 Care Club we have been working on a project to help local animals. As a group we worked together to develop ideas to help the animals in our community. We have decided to bake cat and dog treats as well as research and make toys. Our club is planning on giving these items to the Westerly Animal Shelter at the end of October. Below are pictures of my friends and I shredding material and gathering bells for the toys.
Come and see what students will be doing each month at the BASE program!
